Our Speech at Tourism Day 2026 in Polonnaruwa 

Good evening everyone.

Thank you very much for inviting me here today.

My name is Jana and I am from the Czech Republic. I spend part of the year here in Sri Lanka and I have been coming to Polonnaruwa for many years.

I spend a lot of time around the lake and in the old city, so I see Polonnaruwa not only as a place for tourists, but also as a place where people live every day.

Today I would also like to introduce Perly, a long-time tourist guide in Polonnaruwa. He knows the old city, its history and the area around it very well.

I would like to share some ideas about how Polonnaruwa could be better for tourists and also better for local people.

I am not here only to talk about problems. I am here because I believe Polonnaruwa has a lot of good things.

You have history, nature, the lake, animals, culture and good people.

I would like to talk about how you can use these things better.

1. CLEANLINESS

I walk around the lake almost every day and pick up rubbish because I love this place.

There are not enough bins, and after picnics people often leave plastic, food and bottles.

Some people break alcohol bottles on the stones, and long kite strings are left in the grass.

In the evening, I also see young people near the lake drinking alcohol and sometimes leaving bottles and rubbish behind.

You need more bins, but you also need education and good habits, because keeping Polonnaruwa clean is the job of all of you.

2. BURNING PLASTIC

Another problem is burning plastic and rubbish in public places.

In the morning, I sometimes see people who work in or around the museum burning plastic and other rubbish near the museum.

The smoke and bad smell are not good for tourists or for people who live and work here.

People come to Polonnaruwa to enjoy nature, the lake and a quiet place.

You need a better way to collect rubbish instead of burning it in public places.

3. RESTAURANTS AND SERVICE

Tourists remember not only the places they see, but also the service they get.

In some restaurants, people wait a very long time, even for a simple juice.

Sometimes staff speak only a little English, and tourists may get the wrong food or drink.

You do not need expensive restaurants, but you need clean places, kind service and simple English.

Good service can make tourists happier and may make them want to come back.

4. HOTELS

Polonnaruwa has some good hotels and guesthouses, but some places are expensive for what they offer.

Tourists do not need luxury, but they need a clean room, clean bed and clean bathroom.

The price should be fair for the quality they get.

Good service and cleanliness are basic needs, not luxury.

Good hotels can also help tourists stay longer in Polonnaruwa.

5. CHILDREN AND HISTORY

If you want families to enjoy Polonnaruwa, you should also make history fun for children.

Perly and I have made a history treasure hunt for children in the old city.

Children explore the ruins, look for clues and learn history while they play.

This gives families another reason to spend more time in the old city.

If children enjoy the experience, they may remember Polonnaruwa and want to come back.

6. CULTURE AND CONCERTS

Polonnaruwa can be more than a place where tourists come to see old ruins.

It can also be a place where people enjoy music, dance and Sri Lankan culture.

You could have concerts in good places, with the old city as a beautiful background, but not inside the old monuments.

I talked about this idea with my friend Gayathri Khemadasa, who lived in the Czech Republic for 12 years.

She knows both Sri Lankan and European culture, and she also thinks concerts here could be a good idea if the old sites are protected.

7. WHY TOURISTS LEAVE QUICKLY

Many tourists come to Polonnaruwa, see the old city and then leave for Sigiriya or another place.

Other places have many things to do, so you also need more activities here.

You can offer nature, animals, cycling, food, local crafts, village visits and activities for children.

After a hot day in the old city, tourists could relax near the lake, have a drink or get a massage.

You need to give tourists more reasons to stay one or two nights in Polonnaruwa.

8. EVENING OPENING

Why should tourists enjoy Polonnaruwa only during the day?

If the old sites can be protected, maybe some places could stay open in the evening, perhaps until 10 p.m.

You could have music, cultural shows, stories, lights and other small programmes.

This would give tourists something to do after visiting the old city during the day.

It could give them a reason to have dinner here, stay overnight and spend more time in Polonnaruwa.

9. LOCAL SELLERS

Local people should also get something from tourism.

Tourists should have a chance to buy local food, crafts and other local products.

But there is a difference between offering something and putting pressure on a tourist.

Tourists should be able to look, choose and buy freely.

You could make good places where local sellers can show their products and tourists can choose what they like.

10. TOURIST INFORMATION

A tourist cannot visit a place if he does not know about it.

Polonnaruwa has much more than the old city, but tourists need to know what they can do here.

You need better maps, signs and simple information in English.

Tourists should know about the lake, nature, animals, cycling, villages, food and local life.

When tourists know what is here, they may explore more and stay longer.

11. DISCIPLINE AND RESPONSIBILITY

Keeping Polonnaruwa clean is not only about having bins; it is also about good habits.

Public places belong to all of you, so you all need to take care of them.

One person cannot walk around the lake every day and pick up rubbish left by hundreds of people.

Children and adults need to learn to respect nature and public places.

If everyone does their small part, Polonnaruwa can be cleaner, safer and better for everyone.

CONCLUSION

Polonnaruwa does not need to become a different place.

You only need to use better what you already have.

You have history, nature, the lake, culture and good local people.

You need to give tourists more reasons to see, enjoy and remember Polonnaruwa.

I hope every tourist leaves with one thought: I had a beautiful time here, and I want to come back.

PERSONAL FINAL WORD

Today I came here because you invited me.

I did not come because of the ruins. I have seen them many times.

I came because of you, because I care about Polonnaruwa and the people who live here.

Even though my students are waiting for me, I bought a ticket so I could be here today and share my opinion, because I love this place.

More than anything, I wish Polonnaruwa would understand one thing: not everything has to be done for money. Some things need to be done with the heart.

1. පිරිසිදුකම

ජනා සෑම දිනකම වගේ වැව අවට ඇවිදිමින් කසළ එකතු කරනවා. ඇය එය කරන්නේ පොළොන්නරුවට ආදරය කරන නිසා මිස කිසිවෙකු විවේචනය කිරීමට නොවේ.

වැව අවට ප්‍රමාණවත් කසළ බඳුන් නොමැති අතර විනෝද චාරිකාවලින් පසු ප්ලාස්ටික්, ආහාර අපද්‍රව්‍ය සහ බෝතල් ඉතිරි කරන අවස්ථා තිබෙනවා.

සමහරු මත්පැන් බෝතල් ගල් මත කඩා දමනවා. සරුංගල් නූල්ද තණකොළ අතර ඉතිරි වෙනවා.

මේවා දරුවන්ට, සංචාරකයින්ට සහ සතුන්ට අනතුරුදායක විය හැකියි.

වැව අසල සුන්දර ස්ථානවල සවස තරුණ පිරිස් එකතු වන අවස්ථා තිබෙනවා.

ඒ නිසා එම ප්‍රදේශවලට වැඩි අවධානයක් සහ අවශ්‍ය පාලනයක් අවශ්‍යයි.

කසළ බඳුන් පමණක් ප්‍රමාණවත් නැහැ.

ජනතාවගේ දැනුවත්භාවය, විනය සහ තමන් ජීවත් වන ස්ථානයට ගරු කිරීමත් අවශ්‍යයි.

2. ප්ලාස්ටික් පිළිස්සීම

උදෑසන කාලයේ කෞතුකාගාරය අවට හෝ වැව ආසන්නයේ වැඩ කරන පුද්ගලයන් විසින් ප්ලාස්ටික් සහ වෙනත් කසළ පුළුස්සන අවස්ථා තිබෙනවා.

විශේෂයෙන් කෞතුකාගාරය ආසන්නයේ මෙය සිදුවීම සංචාරක අත්දැකීමට හොඳ නැහැ.

ප්ලාස්ටික් පිළිස්සීමෙන් දුම සහ අප්‍රසන්න ගන්ධයක් ඇති වෙනවා.

එය සංචාරකයන්ට පමණක් නොව එහි වැඩ කරන සහ ජීවත් වන ජනතාවටත් අපහසුයි.

පොළොන්නරුවේ ස්වභාවික පරිසරය සහ සාමකාමී වාතාවරණය සංචාරකයින්ගේ ප්‍රධාන ආකර්ෂණයක්.

ඒ නිසා පොදු ස්ථානවල කසළ පුළුස්සා දැමීම වෙනුවට නිසි ලෙස කසළ එකතු කිරීම සහ ඉවත් කිරීමේ ක්‍රමයක් අවශ්‍යයි.

3. අවන්හල් සහ සේවාව

සංචාරකයන්ට ලස්සන ස්ථාන පමණක් නොව ඔවුන්ට ලැබෙන සේවාවත් වැදගත්.

සමහර අවන්හල්වල සරල ජූස් එකක් සඳහා පවා පැයක් පමණ බලා සිටීමට සිදුවෙන අවස්ථා තිබෙනවා.

සමහර සේවකයන්ට ඉංග්‍රීසි භාෂාව පිළිබඳ සීමිත දැනුමක් තිබෙනවා.

ඇණවුම කිහිප වතාවක් පැහැදිලි කළත් වෙනත් ආහාරයක් හෝ පානයක් ලැබෙන අවස්ථා තිබෙනවා.

අපට සුඛෝපභෝගී අවන්හල් අවශ්‍ය නැහැ.

පිරිසිදු ස්ථානයක්, මිත්‍රශීලී සේවාවක් සහ මූලික ඉංග්‍රීසි සන්නිවේදනයක් තිබීම වැදගත්.

නිවැරදි ඇණවුම සහ වේගවත් සේවාව සංචාරක අත්දැකීම වැඩිදියුණු කරනවා.

හොඳ සේවාවක් තිබුණොත් සංචාරකයන් නැවත පැමිණීමටත් වැඩි කාලයක් රැඳී සිටීමටත් ඉඩ තිබෙනවා.

4. හෝටල්

පොළොන්නරුවේ හොඳ හෝටල් සහ guesthouses තිබෙනවා.

නමුත් සමහර ස්ථානවල මිල සහ ලැබෙන ගුණාත්මකභාවය අතර සාධාරණ සම්බන්ධතාවයක් නැහැ.

සංචාරකයන්ට සුඛෝපභෝගී පහසුකම් අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම අවශ්‍ය නැහැ.

පිරිසිදු කාමරයක්, පිරිසිදු ඇඳක් සහ පිරිසිදු නාන කාමරයක් මූලික අවශ්‍යතා.

මිල ලැබෙන සේවාවට සහ පහසුකම්වලට සාධාරණ විය යුතුයි.

පිරිසිදුකම සහ හොඳ සේවාව සුඛෝපභෝගී දේවල් නොව මූලික දේවල්.

හොඳ නවාතැන් පහසුකම් තිබුණොත් සංචාරකයන්ට පොළොන්නරුවේ වැඩි කාලයක් රැඳී සිටීමට හැකියාව ලැබෙනවා.

5. ළමුන් සහ ඉතිහාසය

ළමුන් සඳහා ඓතිහාසික treasure hunt ක්‍රීඩාවක් තිබෙනවා.

ළමයින් පුරාවිද්‍යා ස්ථාන අතර ගමන් කරමින් ඉඟි සොයනවා.

ඒ හරහා ඔවුන් විනෝද වෙමින් ඉතිහාසය ඉගෙන ගන්නවා.

මෙය පවුල් සඳහා පොළොන්නරුවේ අලුත් ආකර්ෂණයක් විය හැකියි.

දරුවන්ට මෙය මතකයේ රැඳෙන අත්දැකීමක් වුණොත් ඔවුන් නැවත තම පවුල සමඟ පැමිණීමට කැමති විය හැකියි.

පවුලකට පුරාවිද්‍යා ස්ථාන නැරඹීමට වැඩි කාලයක් ගත කිරීමටත් මෙය හේතුවක් විය හැකියි.

6. සංස්කෘතිය සහ ප්‍රසංග

පොළොන්නරුව කියන්නේ පුරාවිද්‍යා ස්ථාන නැරඹීමට පමණක් පැමිණෙන ස්ථානයක් නොව සංස්කෘතිය අත්විඳිය හැකි ස්ථානයක් විය හැකියි.

අදත් සංස්කෘතික සහ නර්තන වැඩසටහන් තිබෙනවා.

සුදුසු ස්ථානවල සංගීත ප්‍රසංග සංවිධානය කිරීම ගැනත් සිතා බැලිය හැකියි.

ප්‍රසංග පුරාවිද්‍යා ස්මාරක ඇතුළත පැවැත්විය යුතු නැහැ.

ඓතිහාසික පරිසරයම ප්‍රසංගයේ කොටසක් බවට පත් කළ හැකියි.

ජනා මේ අදහස Gayathri Khemadasa සමඟ සාකච්ඡා කර තිබෙනවා.

ඇය වසර 12ක් චෙක් ජනරජයේ ජීවත් වී ඇති නිසා ශ්‍රී ලංකා සහ යුරෝපීය සංස්කෘතික පරිසරයන් දෙකම හොඳින් දන්නවා.

ඇයත් පොළොන්නරුවේ මෙවැනි ප්‍රසංග සිත්ගන්නාසුළු අදහසක් විය හැකි බව එකඟ වී තිබෙනවා.

නමුත් පුරාවිද්‍යා ස්ථාන ආරක්ෂා කිරීම ප්‍රධාන කොන්දේසිය විය යුතුයි.

7. සංචාරකයන් ඉක්මනින් පිටවීම

බොහෝ සංචාරකයන් පොළොන්නරුවට පැමිණ පුරාවිද්‍යා නගරය ඉක්මනින් නරඹා පසුව සීගිරිය වැනි වෙනත් ස්ථානයකට යනවා.

වෙනත් සංචාරක ස්ථානවල විවිධ ක්‍රියාකාරකම් තිබීම එයට එක් හේතුවක්.

ඒ නිසා පුරාවිද්‍යා ස්ථානවලට අමතරව පොළොන්නරුවේ ලබාදිය හැකි අත්දැකීම් ගැන සිතා බැලිය යුතුයි.

ස්වභාවය, වනජීවීන්, බයිසිකල්, ආහාර, අත්කම්, ගම්මාන අත්දැකීම් සහ ළමුන් සඳහා ක්‍රියාකාරකම් වර්ධනය කළ හැකියි.

උණුසුම් දවසක් පුරාවිද්‍යා නගරයේ ගත කළ පසු වැව අසල විවේක ගැනීමට කුඩා ස්ථානයක් තිබීම හොඳ අදහසක්.

එහි පානයක් ගැනීමට, විවේක ගැනීමට හෝ massage එකක් ලබා ගැනීමට හැකි විය හැකියි.

මෙවැනි දේවල් සංචාරකයන්ට පොළොන්නරුවේ වැඩි කාලයක් ගත කිරීමට හේතු විය හැකියි.

8. සවස විවෘත කිරීම

පොළොන්නරුව සංචාරකයන්ට දිවා කාලයේ පමණක් අත්විඳිය හැකි ස්ථානයක් විය යුතුද කියා සිතා බැලිය හැකියි.

මෙය ස්ථිර යෝජනාවක් නොව අදහසක් ලෙස සලකා බැලිය හැකියි.

පුරාවිද්‍යා ස්ථාන ආරක්ෂා කළ හැකි නම් සුදුසු ප්‍රදේශ කිහිපයක් සවස දක්වා විවෘත කළ හැකිද යන්න සොයා බැලිය හැකියි.

උදාහරණයක් ලෙස රාත්‍රී 10 පමණ දක්වා.

සංගීතය, සංස්කෘතික වැඩසටහන්, කතාන්දර, විශේෂ ආලෝකකරණය සහ ඉතිහාසය සම්බන්ධ වැඩසටහන් පැවැත්විය හැකියි.

දිවා කාලයේ පුරාවිද්‍යා ස්ථාන නැරඹීමෙන් පසු සංචාරකයන්ට සවස කිරීමට දෙයක් ලැබෙනවා.

එමගින් ඔවුන් රාත්‍රී ආහාරය ගැනීමට සහ රාත්‍රිය පොළොන්නරුවේ ගත කිරීමට පෙළඹිය හැකියි.

එය හෝටල්, අවන්හල්, guides, drivers සහ අනෙකුත් දේශීය ජනතාවට ආදායමක් ලබා දිය හැකියි.

9. දේශීය වෙළෙන්දන්

සංචාරක ව්‍යාපාරයෙන් දේශීය ජනතාවටත් ප්‍රතිලාභ ලැබිය යුතුයි.

සංචාරකයන්ට දේශීය නිෂ්පාදන මිලදී ගැනීමට අවස්ථාව තිබිය යුතුයි.

නමුත් යමක් ඉදිරිපත් කිරීම සහ සංචාරකයෙකුට බලපෑම් කිරීම අතර වෙනසක් තිබෙනවා.

සංචාරකයාට නිදහසේ බලන්න, තෝරන්න සහ මිලදී ගන්න හැකි විය යුතුයි.

දේශීය වෙළෙන්දන්ට තම නිෂ්පාදන ප්‍රදර්ශනය කළ හැකි සුදුසු ස්ථාන සකස් කළ හැකියි.

එමගින් සංචාරකයන්ට පහසු අත්දැකීමක් සහ දේශීය පවුල්වලට ආදායමක් ලැබිය හැකියි.

10. සංචාරක තොරතුරු

සංචාරකයෙකුට තමන් නොදන්නා ස්ථානයකට යාම අපහසුයි.

පොළොන්නරුවේ පැරණි නගරයට වඩා බොහෝ දේ තිබෙනවා.

නමුත් ඒ ගැන සංචාරකයන්ට හොඳින් දැනුම් දිය යුතුයි.

හොඳ maps, signs සහ ඉංග්‍රීසි භාෂාවෙන් තොරතුරු අවශ්‍යයි.

වැව, ස්වභාවය, වනජීවීන්, බයිසිකල්, ගම්මාන, ආහාර සහ දේශීය අත්දැකීම් ගැන සංචාරකයන් දැනුවත් කළ යුතුයි.

තොරතුරු හොඳින් ලබා දුන්නොත් සංචාරකයන්ට තවත් ස්ථාන සොයා බැලීමට සහ වැඩි කාලයක් රැඳී සිටීමට හැකියාව ලැබෙනවා.

11. විනය සහ වගකීම

පිරිසිදුකම කියන්නේ කසළ බඳුන් තැබීම පමණක් නොවෙයි. එය විනය සහ පුද්ගලික වගකීම පිළිබඳ ප්‍රශ්නයක්.

පොදු ස්ථාන අපට අයිති නැති ස්ථාන නොවෙයි. ඒවා අප සියලු දෙනාටම අයිති ස්ථාන.

එක් පුද්ගලයෙකුට සෑම දිනකම වැව වටා ඇවිදිමින් සිය ගණනක් දෙනා විසින් ඉතිරි කරන කසළ එකතු කළ නොහැකියි.

කසළ නොදැමීම පුරුද්දක් බවට පත් විය යුතුයි.

දරුවන්ට කුඩා කාලයේ සිටම පරිසරයට ගරු කිරීම සහ පොදු ස්ථාන පිරිසිදුව තබා ගැනීම පිළිබඳව ඉගැන්විය යුතුයි.

නීති සහ දඩ පමණක් ප්‍රමාණවත් නොවේ.

ජනතාවගේ දැනුවත්භාවය, හොඳ පුරුදු සහ වගකීමත් ඒ තරම්ම වැදගත්.

සෑම පුද්ගලයෙකුම තමන්ගේ කුඩා වගකීම ඉටු කළොත් පොළොන්නරුව දේශීය ජනතාවටත් සංචාරකයන්ටත් වඩා පිරිසිදු, ආරක්ෂිත සහ ප්‍රසන්න ස්ථානයක් කළ හැකියි.

අවසාන වචන

පොළොන්නරුව කියන්නේ පුරාවිද්‍යා නටබුන් පමණක් ඇති ස්ථානයක් නොවෙයි. එය ඉතිහාසය, ස්වභාවය, වැව, සංස්කෘතිය සහ අපේ මිනිසුන් සමඟ ජීවත්වන නගරයක්.

අපට තිබෙන දේ හොඳින් රැකබලා ගනිමින් කුඩා දේවල් පවා වැඩිදියුණු කළහොත්, සංචාරකයන්ට වඩා හොඳ අත්දැකීමක් ලබා දීමටත්, අපේ දේශීය ජනතාවට වඩා හොඳ අනාගතයක් නිර්මාණය කිරීමටත් අපට හැකි වේවි.

පොළොන්නරුව වෙනස් නගරයක් බවට පත් කිරීමට අපට අවශ්‍ය නැහැ.

අපට අවශ්‍ය වන්නේ පොළොන්නරුවේ දැනටමත් තිබෙන සුන්දරත්වය සහ වටිනාකම ලෝකයට වඩා හොඳින් පෙන්වීම පමණයි.
